How to get into cycling - Local events and cycle skills training
Posted on 05/03/2017

First timer / Novice

If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at cycling, Hillingdon council run coached sessions for free (yes, FOR FREE!). This will help build confidence, remain safe on the roads and generally put a smile on your face! The link below will take you to all the options Hillingdon endorse within the borough.

http://www.hillingdon.gov.uk/15059

Family friendly

Hillingdon run family friendly rides, if you want to get out and about with your kids (16 yrs and younger). The rides are for those who are already confident bikers, with the pace the group matched to that of the last rider. The atmosphere is encouraging, welcoming and fun!

http://www.hillingdon.gov.uk/article/26642/Guided-cycle-rides

Local club rides and groups

HSBC Breeze (women only) & Ride Social rides run rides from local hubs, with a variety of route options to suit almost all abilities.

https://www.letsride.co.uk

Off-road

With Uxbridge being on the outskirts of London, off-road access isn’t an issue. Black Park is just down the road; Ruislip Woods, Bayhurst Woods, Mad Bess Woods and the surrounds have some enjoyable single track with some short, sharp lumps - there are also plenty of bridleways, woodland and trails. This means there is no end of fun and challenging areas to explore. In the immediate area, the land is largely flat, so those new to the disciplines of mountain biking or cyclo-cross need not be intimidated by hulking great climbs!

Let us know if you've tried any of these, or intend to sign up. If there are any other options we haven't listed here you think people should know about, give us a shout @recycleabikeUK, on Facebook or via contactus@recycleabike.co.uk.

Taking the next step in cycling - more adventurous local events!
Posted on 05/03/2017

Road rides

For those with some regular mileage under their belt looking to take the next step, local clubs run regular rides from Denham Nurseries (www.WillesdenCyclingClub.co.uk) with groups ranging from ‘touring’, to ‘rip your legs off’ fast. Hillingdon Cycle Circuit (http://hillingdoncyclecircuit.org.uk/) also run road racing training sessions. HCC is a circuit closed to motor vehicle traffic, it’s also child friendly, with the Hillingdon Slipstreamers (http://www.slipstreamers.co.uk/) the resident youth team at the venue.

Michael Sobel House Hospice Care - "On Your Bike!" (http://www.michaelsobellhospice.co.uk/product/on-your-bike-2017-individual-entry-and-teams-up-to-5/)

40 miles for 40 years – that’s the challenge for this year’s annual bike ride!

  • The route takes cyclists through scenic countryside including, Amersham, Hemel Hempstead and Chipperfield
  • £25 entry for adults before Friday 15th April
  • £30 on the day
  • £10 entry for 11-16 years, who must be accompanied by an adult
  • Team Offer, £20 per adult for teams of 6 or more before 28th February
  • Sign up by calling 020 3826 2367

The Bucks Road Sportive (http://www.bucksoffroadsportive.co.uk/index-2.html) is run by the West Drayton Mountain Bike Club. This is a longer ‘sportive’ style ride, with a set route to follow. This takes in some beautiful parts of the Chilterns, with a good deal of lumpy bits thrown in for good measure. Flat it certainly isn’t. Although picturesque it certainly is.

Off-road

Local club West Drayton Mountain Bike Club (www.westdraytonmbc.co.uk) run a few events through the year.

Bucks Off Road Sportive - 14th May - (http://www.bucksoffroadsportive.co.uk/index-3.html) – a real festival of mountain biking. This event encompasses all that is good about the sport, sociable, beautiful scenery & grin enducingly fun! There are a number of distance options to choose from 40km, 75km, 100km & the absolutely quad squashing 125km. There are video’s and further information on the link, if you want to find out a bit more about what it looks like to take part.

Black Park XC race - 4th June

Night of the Knobbly Tread (9th Sept '17)– A novel off-road race… by night! A 5km loop is laid out by the amazing volounteers from the club, with racing commencing at dusk, deep into the night. It’s a complete thrill, and quite excitingly eerie at times. A real local adventure! But luckily without the zombies, like it’s nightmarish namesake, Night of the Living Dead. Hopefully…

Challenging

Westerly CC organise an audax (set route rather than race) on the May Day Bank Holiday, Monday May 1st from Ruislip.

There are a 100km and a 200km option for the seriously fit and determined. The price of entry includes some food, plus tea or coffee at the start, a GPX file (sat-nav data file for those with Garmin or similar), Route Sheet, Brevet Card (for the controls) and a cake at the end! The bar will be open all day at the start / finish venue.

http://www.westerley.cc/may-day-chiltern-audaxes/

We hope this has been helpful. We’d love to hear if anyone has tried any of these or if they intend to take the next step up. If you know of any local events that you think people would like to know about, give us a shout on social media @RecycleaBikeUK or Facebook, or email us at contactus@recycleabike.co.uk.
